AFTERGLOW : light of memories
Afterglow (n.) –         1.  The light that remains in the sky after sunset
                                         2.  The good feeling that remains after a happy event

AFTERGLOW is the 7th solo painting exhibition by Chayanich Muangthai, an artist who never stops seeking aesthetics in different colors and shapes in her own way. This new series of work present the light and memories that we all have experienced. Chayanich recalls the last light of the day remaining in the sky. Even though there is little light left, it can still make her see colors on scenery and objects before everything is shrouded in darkness.
The visual image is a phenomenon that arises from the relationship between the amount of light in each spectrum as well as the absorption and reflection of the object surface at the incident light angle. In the evening when the sun is fading, the brightness and temperature of the hues affecting the landscape and objects in the foreground also change.
The last light of the day reveals some colors from the corners of objects that we never thought existed. The last light gradually makes the image we see to reduce its color bit by bit, second by second, until everything becomes black as one with darkness. The artist captures memories from various corners of the house, trees, flowers, spider webs, before and after dusk, to express through her paintings.
Chayanich presents her work in the AFTERGLOW exhibition in the size of her house window and photos in the photo album to compare the visual experience that the eye sees and images that are recorded momentarily. She arranges these works in descending order of their saturation to explain the changes observed between day and night.
In other words, AFTERGLOW is a metaphor for changes in light compared to the flow of memories. Memories are not static. When we experience anything in the beginning, we often choose to remember what impressed us. As such, happiness and sadness are the variables that make us remember some things more vividly than others. However, when the influence of those feelings diminished, details that are different from the original memories will be revealed. Having learned by opening her senses to nature’s evening phenomena, Chayanich realizes that we all crave for something special – material possessions, love, relationship, and ambition – that we think is not there yet. However, indeed, those things may already be with us if only we open our minds to explore everything around us.
